An elderly professor is murdered, leaving a puzzling crime scene for police to unravel and a laboratory housing all kinds of marine life. But something is missing … something huge.
Recent highschool graduate Kaia Craig has problems of her own, with her career as an ironwoman on the Gold Coast in jeopardy after a horrific accident. Yet someone wants to hold her accountable.
After nearly drowning in Lake Pelutz and her attackers on the run, Kaia is left with more than just physical injuries. She’s convinced she saw something in the depths of the lake: something that choose to spare her. Uncertain whether she’s running towards the discovery of a friend or foe, Kaia begins digging into a mystery that may have bigger ramifications than she or any of her friends can fathom.
It Came From The Deep is a thrilling combination of young adult and science fiction from the author of the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid? series, Maria Lewis.
About a week ago I was part of the blog tour for Maria Lewis’ new young adult novel, It Came from the Deep, and was able to share a brief Q&A with her in anticipation of the new story.
Well, it was released, and I read it and I was blown away.
It Came from the Deep is one of those stories that sticks with you days after you’ve read it. I read the entire thing in one sitting; once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down.
Kaia Craig lives on the Gold Coast, with her brother and father, and is haunted by an accident during an iron woman competition nearly a year prior. Attacked while on a run, and nearly drowning in a local lake, Kaia becomes convinced she saw something while underwater. She begins to investigate what she might have seen and finds herself embroiled in a mystery that she couldn’t have imagined.
Kaia was a fabulous lead character; she’s strong, despite her insecurities and the guilt she feels. She follows her gut and does what she believes to be the right thing. She has a fantastic relationship with her older brother, and they book look out for one another – there were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments between the two of them and their relationship felt so natural.
It’s hard to believe that there aren’t (currently) more mermaid-inspired books out there, but they’re going to have a hard time topping Maria Lewis’ take, which blends the real world with science-fiction in a highly engaging fashion (even for someone who’s not a big beach/water person!).
At present, it’s a standalone book that is entirely satisfying in its entirety (although I can’t say I’ll complain if there’s a follow up book!). I absolutely adored It Came From the Deep!
5 out of 5 stars.
