I received a copy of Some Shall Break from the publishers for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

September, 1982: Three months after the showdown with Simon Gutmunsson in St Elizabeths Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Emma Lewis has retreated to college life in Ohio, and the support of her family and her therapist. But Emma has a unique gift for hunting killers, and the FBI wants her back…

Travis Bell is on track to make a career in law enforcement. But the FBI unit’s latest case is testing all his skills, and in Emma’s absence, Travis has accepted help from Kristin Gutmunsson, Simon’s eccentric twin sister, to track a dangerous new target.

When evidence points to the traumatic Daniel Huxton case from Emma’s past, the FBI decides to put her into protective custody. Compelled to prevent more tragedy, Emma reaches out once more to Simon Gutmunsson to save the copycat’s next victims – but as always, Simon knows more than he’s telling…

Can Emma and Travis conquer a killer in the most horrifying situation they’ve ever faced?

Some Shall Break by Ellie Marney is the follow up to None Shall Sleep, a 1980s historical young adult thriller which sees a young FBI agent in training and a young woman who survived a serial killer working together to solve a serial crime. In Some Shall Break, Travis and Emma are reunited when a serial killer – who appears to be copying the man who held Emma captive – is identified. It’s up to them to identify the similarities and differences between the two cases and try to identify the killer before it’s too late.

Some Shall Break was my most anticipated young adult release for 2023, because Ellie Marney never disappoints. It’s been a while since I read the first book, but it was great being back with these characters, especially Simon – the serial killer Emma and Travis worked with in the first book – who is just a delightfully charismatic and manipulative character. I also loved seeing the growth in Travis and Emma’s relationship; this book sees more of Emma’s history revealed, and the trauma she lives each day, and Travis is determined to be a better friend.

There were lots of twists and turns, and plenty of on-the-edge-of-your-seat moments. The ending definitely leaves it open for additional stories, and I would never so no to that.

Please note that this book deals with kidnapping, murder, SA, assault, serial killers, trauma and therapy. Read at your own discretion and look after yourselves.
