I received a copy of Whispers of You from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One night—a single bullet—cost me everything.

My body, broken beyond repair. The boy I’d thought was my forever. The life I’d always dreamt of.

Now, Holt’s back. And he’s no longer a boy, but a man with shadows in his eyes and demons haunting him.

He says he’s here to make things right. To get back a little bit of all we’ve lost. And he doesn’t show any signs of leaving the small town that has been my refuge.

As stolen moments turn to days, Holt’s around every corner. With his burning stare and lingering touches. Before long, my walls come crashing down and I’m just hoping that taking this second chance isn’t as reckless as it feels.

But not everyone is happy that Holt has returned. As tragedy strikes again, I’m the one left in the crosshairs. And Holt might not be able to save me this time…

Whispers of You combines a few of my favourite things – a small town, second chance romance AND romantic suspense! Plus, it’s by Catherine Cowles who I trust to blend those three things so effectively I feel for the romantic leads.

Wren and Holt were high school sweethearts torn apart by tragic circumstances that left Wren injured in a shooting and Holt traumatised by not being able to protect her. Flash forward 10 years and Holt is returning to his small hometown after his father has had a heart attack and he comes face-to-face with the woman he left behind, broken-hearted. As the anniversary of the shootings in the town gets closer, the survivors are suddenly in the cross-hairs again and this time Holt is determined not to let anything happen to Wren.

Catherine Cowles has done an excellent job at crafting a small town where everyone is in everyone else’s business, but where it still feels like people have each other’s back, too. Holt and his family – 3 brothers, 1 sister and his parents – are central to the plot line and are wonderful side characters that I can’t wait to see in future books. Both Wren and Holt have their own demons from the past that they need to confront, and fears that they need to talk about as the move forward in their relationship.

Quite simply put, once I started reading Whispers of You I couldn’t put it down and I had to know who was behind the mystery and what their motives were. I’m very eager to continue this series as it releases this year.
