The Thrall is the third book in the Seven Sins MC series, a paranormal romance series that follows a motorcycle club of demons. So far in this world we’ve met the demons, witches and a small collection of other supernatural beings. In The Thrall we get our first up-close look at Jessica Gadziala’s vampires.
Nova is the thrall to a vampire, and has been for years. No longer the favourite, she’s loaned out to her masters guests. A particularly sadistic vampire has taken a liking to her and she’s desperate to escape… the only problem is that a Thrall can’t leave their master. That changes when she’s taken a supernatural bar and her interactions with the vampires are noted by Drex, a demon from the Seven Sins MC. He recognises her unhappiness immediately and against his better judgement, kidnaps her from her master. In pain from being separated from the vampires, but craving freedom, Nova is willing to do whatever it takes to be free.
This book deals with some heavy topics in a really sensitive way. While Drex isn’t the sensitive, soulful hero, he does care deeply about Nova and her wellbeing, especially when he realises the extent of the pain Nova is in when taken from the vampires. He risks war between the demons and the vampires to help her because it’s the right thing to do – which is unusual for him, given what we’ve learnt about him previously. And, for his character growth, he recognises that he’s doing something out of the norm for him.
Nova is an interesting character – she accepted her role as a Thrall (which has to be done voluntarily) years earlier and has only now begun to regret that decision, but she can’t see a way out. By the time we meet her, she’s beaten done (but not out completely), and after she begins to spend more time with Drex, she begins to believe that she can be free again.
This book does feature a lot of violence, drug use and sex, so if those are not your things, proceed with caution. It’s paranormal romance that leans heavily into the darker side of the genre, but it’s still very accessible.
I can’t wait to see what Jessica Gadziala does next in this universe she’s created.
